Career pathway
I followed quite a normal scholastic and graduate approach to finding my eventual career, normal if you gloss over that I decided to follow a creative lifestyle in my last year of sixth form, years after dropping all artistic subjects. I found myself frantically learning how to be creative before being accepted by the Art and Design Foundation Course that had tactfully suggested the previous year that the ability to draw was fundamental. Through a Degree in Three dimensional design at Manchester I specialised in silver smithing and jewellery techniques but went on to follow a developing interest in blacksmithing that lasted just over a year and ended with disillusionment. I found my self in Birmingham through mixed fortune, initially sharing a friends workshop and enrolled on a business development scheme that developed my jewellery and business experience to the point that it became self supporting. Numerous opportunities since have developed my business and personal skills still further.

Industry Relationships
I share a workshop with three other designer makers and feel part of a large community of designer makers within the area. This community come together informally to share costs during trade shows and other events or more formally to set up groups such as Centrepiece that puts on a selling exhibition during Christmas. We talk to each other and pass on information and “news”

Although I buy most of my ordinary materials from companies outside of the jewellery quarter, I am reliant on the diverse number of companies found locally for my more specialist requirements such as gold and platinum, findings, gems and emergencies. The personal relationships I have with people who supply me with goods and services has been invaluable when situations arise that need quick solutions. It’s also quite hard for people to say no when your standing in front of them looking desparate!

Inspiration

The designs in my jewellery evolve from observing how different processes like forging or folding effect the shape of a metal form. Complex three dimensional forms can be created from a flat sheet by combining one technique with another or one after another, a specific order is often needed to produce an effect and sometimes specific dimensions of material are required to start with or must be achieved during the making process in order for subsequent processes to work correctly to control the finished form.

Running parallel to this I currently seek to create jewellery with forms that echo the subtle qualities of shapes found in nature. Seeds, pods and leaves are a perennial fascination which I find lend themselves well to interpretation through metal.

Clients
My work is sold through craft and jewellery galleries that have seen my work at trade fairs and to the public through special exhibitions and retail fairs.

Tips for Newcomers
The developing community in the Jewellery quarter is very important to me, I would recommend locating to anywhere that has a similar community of like minded people that you can join in with.
