I
have been working as a jeweller for 13 years. I spent most of
this time working for an independent jeweller in France where
I learned many of the traditional techniques. During this time
I mainly worked on a diverse range of private commissions (ranging
from Van Cleef & Arpel designs to custom-made settings for
meteorite fragments). In the year 2000 I studied engraving and
chasing at the leading Parisian applied art school 'l'Ecole
Boulle' and following this become a tutor in France's two main
jewellery colleges.
After meeting an inspiring Birmingham-based artist-jeweller
at London's Jewellery International trade fair in September
2003, I decided to explore for myself the openings offered by
Birmingham's vibrant jewellery scene. Attracted by the important
role of contemporary jewellery in the UK, I relocated from Paris
to the Birmingham jewellery quarter with the aim of contributing
to the activities there.
Industry
Relationships
I
work with various suppliers in the jewellery quarter for tools
and casting (e.g. Suttons, Cousins and Weston Beamore). The
F1 Gallery played a crucial role for me on my arrival as I was
immediately integrated: I was commissioned to sell my own work
and provided sales/administrative support and was able to start
forming a network. I am also in touch with the jewellery quarter
regeneration partnership which have offered me much invaluable
support and advice (e.g. through their friendly and professional
staff and print material). I am also a self-employed jeweller
for a company based in the Big Peg.
Inspiration
My
principal inspiration lies in elements of Urban life, such as
architecture, motorway networks and underground systems. I am
fascinated by the maze of horizontal/vertical and oblique lines
which make up these structures and have a dynamic impact on
our everyday lives.

Tips
for Newcomers
Since
the jewellery industry can at times seem quite insular, an open
and inquisitive outlook are important as are perseverance and
determination. Self-renewal and determination are of utmost
importance in this field. The various supportive initiatives
such as those offered in Birmingham's jewellery quarter all
serve as an extra driving force to succeed.
