Career pathway
Trained as an artist I have been self employed as a full time creative, since graduation in ’86.Intermitantly art works were sold whilst my first commercially viable career was selling graphic designs and printed merchandise.I started to design and make jewellery in’96.I learnt the techniques necessary as the needs of my career developed, including jewellery design and manufacture. However my business has now grown to the point where I have both my jewellery and art work manufactured by sub contractors. This now means that I can concentrate on the most important aspects of my career ie research and practise of my various art projects, administration of the business and career planning/ development of my career.

Industry Relationships

As mentioned above I use other businesses to help manufacture my work. I have copper sheet etched to produce a collection of commercial jewellery that I then hand finish and sell via trade shows to galleries around the country.I also produce a range of silver and vitreous enamel jewellery ; this is cast by Weston Beamor then I walk it up Vyse st. to T.S.Batchelor finishers and then have the work enamelled by Dayna White. This produces a finished product so I can concentrate on sculpting the masters and therefore can expand the range of my work far more quickly. This had led to enough time to develop a range of bronze sculptures which are cast and finished by Lunts.

Inspiration

(max 10 lines) As an artist I am motivated by discovery and understanding of life and my experience of it. In other words I see art a branch/discipline within philosophy. My specific sources of research and reference are scientific and philosophical writings. Each collection of work or art project has its own specific criteria, references and specific practise. The following is a brief statement on the most recent sculpture and silver jewellery I have produced:-
This collection of work is based on studies in scientific and philosophical writings (some emergent, some disputed, some old and new).
My artistic expression comes through exploration ot those ideas as abstract form. Each ‘experiment’ produces a unique form based on notions of psychosensualenergy flows, their growth, combinations andreactions. The sensual exploration continues as the artefacts are handled and/or worn. My aim is not to discover or achieveknowngoals or have repeatable results but to energise.

Clients
I sell wholesale to galleries that I contact via trade shows. At present I do not sell direct to the public.

Tips for Newcomers
1. before moving in to a particular sector of the creative industries check that it will offer you the opportunity for you to express what you need to do to be creatively fulfilled .
2. Will this choice give you now or eventually the life style and income you require?
3. What you want to do is not necessarily what the market wants so you either have to adapt your work/practise to that market, find a new market, or find a way of supporting your passion with other work
4. Be open to change and opportunities.
